“Risk Assessed” Vaccinations

Core vaccinations include:

Dogs:

  • Distemper
  • Parvovirus
  • Adenovirus 2 (Hepatitis)
  • Parainfluenza
  • Rabies*

* The State of Texas requires an initial rabies vaccination, a one year booster, then boosters every 3 years thereafter. Most killed rabies vaccines are licensed and proven efficacious for at least 3 years. Bexar County recognizes the 3-year rabies vaccination, however Kendall and Comal Counties still require annual vaccination with the 3-year rabies product. Our policy at Bergheim Pet Hospital & Clinic is to let the pet owner choose (informed consent) how they would like to have their pets vaccinated.

Cats:

  • Rhinotracheitis
  • Calicivirus
  • Panleukopenia
  • Rabies*

Bergheim Pet Hospital & Clinic utilizes only non-adjuvented vaccinations by (Purevax by Merial) to minimize the risk of allergic reaction and vaccination-site sarcomas in cats. Currently, the Purevax Rabies vaccination is only licensed for 1 year duration of immunity so annual vaccination is recommended.

Non Core (elective) vaccinations include:

Dogs:

  • Bordetella (kennel cough): recommended for dogs that board, groom, or train
  • Leptospirosis: the 4 serovar vaccine is recommended for dogs exposed to wildlife (raccoons, skunks, squirrels, rats, mice) or standing water (creeks, tanks, ponds)
  • rattlesnake (Crotalus) vaccine: recommended for dogs that hunt, hike, or camp more than 2 hours from an emergency vet

Cats:

  • Feline Leukemia: recommended for cats with outdoor access or exposure to indoor/outdoor cats

Bergheim Pet Hospital & Clinic does NOT currently utilize the following vaccinations

Dogs:

  • Canine Coronavirus
  • Lyme disease
  • Giardia
  • Prophyromonas Denticanis-Gulae-Salivosa Bactrin (“Dental vaccine”)

Cats:

  • Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)
  • Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
  • Chlamydia
  • Ringworm

Why not?

  1. Lack of efficacy
  2. Potential harm
  3. Low/no risk of exposure
